We are delighted to announce that Jakob Hedberg has joined Uppsala Clinical Research Center (UCR) as our new Scientific Director!
Jakob will be working closely with Stefan James and our outstanding section leaders—
Maria Eriksson Svensson, Maria Sörby, Sara Hansson, Johan Lindbäck and Katarina Boustedt to further strengthen our commitment to clinical research and advancing patient care. With Jakob's extensive expertise and dedication, he is set to make a meaningful impact on both UCR and the future of healthcare.

Jakob is a surgeon specializing in esophageal and gastric cancer, both in his clinical practice and research. He has extensive experience as a regional process leader at RCC (Regional Cancer Centre), on the research committee for Uppsala Comprehensive Cancer Center, and in the national steering group for quality registries. Additionally, he has co-authored clinical guidelines, led international randomized studies in his field, and served as Director and board member for the Bengt Ihre Research Fellowship, a network of leading gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery researchers. Jakob’s broad network is expected to be a valuable asset in his role at UCR.
Jakob’s focus areas will include:
- Developing new concepts for clinical and epidemiological research,
- Actively seeking new collaborators in both academia and industry,
- Contributing to the initiation of new research studies and clinical trials at UCR,
- Providing expertise and support to UCR staff,
- Representing and promoting UCR locally, nationally, and internationally.
