A national quality registry contains person-based details relating to a problem, the actions taken and the results within the health and care services. The national quality registry is certified by the National Steering Group for Quality Registers, which also performs ongoing monitoring of the registry.

The quality registers provide unique opportunities for the Swedish healthcare system to enhance the quality of the patient care delivered. A fully-developed quality register enables follow-up of the health care of all patients in a given disease group. The primary purpose of the registry is to support the healthcare services in their endeavours to provide evidence-based treatments for a variety of medical conditions. The registers provide feedback on the work of the healthcare providers and can generate intra-departmental comparisons of the treatments and results, as well as comparisons with other care providers.

Sweden has more than 100 national quality registers. This is in addition to a large number of other local, regional, and national quality registers.
